ARMAN IZADI

Candidate for Board of Governors Member at Large

Hello Esteemed Undergraduate Students!

My name is Arman Izadi and I’m a U2 Electrical Engineering student running to be one of your Board of Governors General Members this upcoming year! You may have seen me around at various events like Frosh, Eweek, Blues or OAP. In terms of council involvement, I sat on EUS Council as a U1 rep in 2015-2016 but have been a professional proxy since my first semester because I actually enjoy sitting in 3+ hour meetings and discussing matters that will directly influence you, the students. I’ve also sat on the VP Finance selection committee twice and the SSF Committee thrice and I’ve also been a part of the Blacklisting and Policy, Bylaw and Review Committee. I want to be a part of the Board because I want to see the EUS flourish into the student society I know it has the potential to be. I want every student in engineering to know what we do with their student fees and what they’re getting in return. I also plan on sticking around McGill for a while so I want to see long term plans that the BoG will make come to fruition. Read more on my platform below and thank you for voting!

1) What does the Board do and why should you care?

People don’t realize the full importance of the Board of Governors and that’s something I’d love to see change. Every year the same is said but I believe that showing enthusiasm and concrete changes that the Board can make for students is a first step in getting people to realize what it does. Talking about it with constituents at events and councils, asking for their constant feedback and their opinions and establishing a clear line of communication with both involved and non-EUS engineering students is a great way to both be transparent and foster more active participation in bureaucratic matters of Engineering.

2) Patience is a virtue

Going through lengthy Bylaws and Policies and scrutinizing them can be a torture. The importance of something as simple as wording in a policy, however, can change the outcome of a committee’s mandate. If I am to be elected to be part of the Board, I would aim to be a part of the constitutional working committee planned for next year and other working groups that deal with policies like this as I believe having strong guidelines to refer to is a crucial aspect of a student society and is something that needs dedicated time and patience. Working with a team of dedicated individuals like the Board would also make this herculean task doable and I’d aim to gather interest and feedback from EUS council as well, as it directly affects them too.

3) Long Term

An inherent part of the BoG’s mandate is long term planning. This past year we’ve seen some interesting ideas brought up and discussed and I’d like to keep those in continuation and maintain the efforts put in by last year’s Board. Turnover can be a bit hard in the EUS however thankfully the Board's structure allows for an easier transition and maintaining momentum of progress.
